About Charlie McCullers
A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Charlie is an accomplished artist whose work stirs emotions and awakens the unconscious of the spirit within. Degreed with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from the University of Georgia, 1980, Charlie was well on his way with an uncompromising esthetic style, that today is evident in his body of work. Charlie McCullers Photography Studio was opened in 1985, where relationships were created, and work was completed for several Fortune 500 companies, such as BellSouth, SunTrust Banks, and Coca-Cola. Charlie began reaching out to remote areas of the world in search of defining his esthetic documentary style, which ignites the passion and spirit of his exhibits. Much of the work done in Africa, Asia, Europe, Central and South America has provided the structure and style that would shape his work for years to come.
1990, upon his native City of Atlanta being awarded the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games, a seven-year documentary was born. Charlie photographed throughout the city, as all of Atlanta prepared for the historic event, covering both the Olympic games and the tremendous effort of producing the games. Concurrently, Charlie created another sports based documentary – Baseball. From 1993 through 2000, a large body of work was created of the Atlanta Braves. Photographed in black and white, and only capturing images that illustrated the culture of the Game, not the game itself, some of Charlie’s finest images were produced.
The Baseball body of work was exhibited in 1996, in a single artist show curated by Jane Jackson of Jackson Fine Art, and remained as part of a permanent display at Atlanta Braves Turner Field. In recognition of the exhibition, Charlie was commissioned by the High Museum of Art as principal photographer for the “Elton John – Chorus of Light” exhibit in 2001. Executing the technical photographic responsibilities of copying all images of the exhibition, Charlie was also commissioned to photograph the personal dwellings of Sir Elton John, in both Atlanta, Georgia and Nice, France. Charlie produced the portrait of Elton used to promote the exhibition.
In 2000, a relationship with the Atlanta Ballet opened up opportunities to photograph the collaborative spirit of the theatre, the stage and the Performing Artist. In 2005, as Principal Photographer for Atlanta Ballet, Charlie documented and continues to capture the collaborative spirit through rehearsals, performances, road-trips, commercial shoots and personal projects. Because of his unique relationship with the Performing Artists, Charlie continues to explore the world of artistic collaboration whenever possible.
